Mukhi made Indian Super League history in October after finding the back of the net during his side's 2-2 draw with league leaders Bengaluru FC.
At just 16 years of age, the substitute cemented his place as the league's youngest ever goalscorer, with Cahill even passing on his plaudits.
"This is the best moment of your life," Cahill said.
However, in a stunning twist, Telegraph India have since revealed the Jharkhand native is in fact 28, 12 years older than officially recognised.
As a result, the AIFF have suspended Mukhi for six months and revoked his registration after the failure to provide correct evidence of his age.
"All India Football Federation (AIFF) Disciplinary Committee has imposed a six-month suspension on Jamshedpur FC player Gourav Mukhi with immediate effect," the AIFF said in a statement.
Mukhi was reportedly suspended by the AIFF back in 2015 for a similar age-fraud case regarding his call-up for the Under-17 FIFA World Cup.
