From 1968 to 1989 the Mondrian-inspired jersey was awarded to the cyclists that did the best in a combination of the general, points and mountains classifications.
The design of this year's four jerseys by Le Coq Sportif gives the slightest of nods to this patchwork-quilt style jersey with a subtle blended squares of that jersey's own colour.
At this stage, with just images of the design rather than of the final product, it's perhaps most noticeable on the green jersey.
And not so noticeable yet with the polka-dot jersey:
