'A new era' - Owner Ryan hails Copeland's Mitchelton-Scott switch

Mitchelton-Scott owner Gerry Ryan believes new general manager Brent Copeland is "a great fit" for the team as they look to pick up the pieces from Shayne Bannan's exit.

Bannan and financial manager Alvaro Crespi left the Australian team after a sponsorship deal with the Manuela Fundacion was called off less than a week after it was announced.

The swift overhaul came into effect on July 1, with Ryan eager to move the team forward into "a new era."

"It’s had a positive response so far," Ryan told RIDE Media.

"But we've got lots to do. So, you never look back, you look forward."

Copeland's arrival comes after a successful spell with Bahrain-McLaren, a team the 48-year-old helped set up in 2017.

“I’ve known Brent for the last couple of years," Ryan said.

"Shayne introduced me to him and we’ve been at the same hotel with our teams and I was impressed with his style. I thought he’d be a great fit for the team.”

Ryan's decision to part ways with Bannan, meanwhile, brings an end to a long-term relationship - one he now hopes to build alongside Copeland's philosophy.

“He’s (Bannan) done a wonderful job but it’s time for a change and a new direction," Ryan told RIDE Media.

“We had different philosophies in the end, different visions of where we were going.

“It’s heads down. A) To finish the season; hopefully we can get the riders back on the bike and make sure that the protocols for COVID-19 are set in concrete.

"Our situation is: the health of the riders, first. Safety is taking a priority. It’s a big task for every team to make sure we stick to a plan.

“And, B) We want to get back racing and build the team for 2021/2022.

“We’ve got a few sponsors who we are working on, ones that we were talking to before we had a little diversion, but we’re back on track.”
