Ashleight Moolman-Pasio (South Africa) was the aggressor throughout the race on the climbs, but she was unable to shake her rivals on the final ascent above virtual New York.
Adegeest rode an intelligent race behind the defending champion to win the second UCI Cycling esports World Championships ahead of Cecilie Hansen (Sweden) and Zoe Langham (Great Britain). She managed to cling to the wheel of Moolman-Pasio on the final climb, then used her featherweight powerup on the final kick up to the line, distancing her rivals to win convincingly.
It wasn't the most attacking of races, but proved to be one of attrition due to Moolman-Pasio's surges on the 1.4-kilometre climb that marked the end of the three laps of the course. The first climb saw a large group unable to hold the pace, including Australian favourite Sarah Gigante and New Zealand Zwift Academy winner Ella Harris.
Moolman-Pasio continued to up the second time on the climb, using the steep gradients to reduce the peloton to just 24 riders as the third and final lap began.
That lap saw more attacking as the American team launched a number of moves, with Katheryn Curi the most successful, able to grab 16 second lead on the peloton.
However, isolated off the front, Curi was able to be brought at the foot of the final ascent and Moolman-Pasio went to raise the pace again.
Hansen, Langham and Adegeest were the only riders to hold on to Moolman Pasio when she used a featherweight powerup and in the final dash to the line it was Adegeest who emerged the strongest from Hansen and Langham with Moolman-Pasio fourth.
Australia's highest placed finisher was Bre Vine in 11th, backing up from her 10th in the only previous edition of the event.
