Adelaide United's McGowan rejects K-League offers

Key Adelaide United defender Dylan McGowan has rejected an offer to join K-League side Jeonamm Dragons – just nine days after re-signing with the A-League champions for another season.

McGowan, 24, was an integral part of the tightest defence in the competition as the Reds stormed to Premiers Plate and championship glory, but he has a buyout clause in his contract which permits him to leave the club at any time should an irrestible offer be tabled.

However, with the Dragons languishing third bottom of the K-League, McGowan – who played every minute of every game last season - resisted their multi-season carrot, while keeping open the option of playing at a “higher level” should the right opportunity emerge.

While his rejection of the Dragons bid will be welcome news to Reds coach Guillermo Amor, McGowan's agent – Sydney-based Buddy Farah – made it clear that the former Hearts man has ambitions that stretch beyond the A-League.

“It was a serious offer from Korea, but the player (McGowan) has bigger hopes and expectations to go abroad and test himself at the very highest level that he can," he said.

“He (McGowan) made that clear even when he re-signed for Adelaide that he has a burning desire to challenge himself elsewhere at some stage – and who knows when that will be.

“The fact is that the interest from Jeonamm didn’t match his ambitions.”

McGowan proved his worth in a formidable partnership with Iacopo La Rocca or Jordan Elsey for the Reds last season.
