Demoitie's Wanty-Gobert team said in a statement earlier on Sunday night that his condition "remains very serious. His wife and family are with him at the hospital in Lille." but he did not recover.

He had been transported to a hospital in Lille after the accident in Sainte-Marie-Cappel, northern France.

"The rider died. An inquiry is under way to determine the circumstances," said Frederic Evrard, spokesman for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais regional gendarmerie in France told AFP.

More to come.
