The loss leaves the Gunners facing an uphill battle to make the quarter-finals in the Principality in three weeks' time and a host of Arsenal fans and football personalities took to Twitter to express their dismay.
Famously outspoken Gunners fan Piers Morgan has been a regular critic of manager Arsene Wenger and pulled no punches in his assessment.
He wrote: "Wenger will never quit & nobody at Arsenal has the balls to fire him. We're all trapped in a Groundhog Day of mediocre bulls**t. #afc".
And he was not the only disgruntled fan, with golfer Ian Poulter tweeting from Florida: "Total F$E¥%#*+ Joke. What a defensive disaster tonight. Simply not good enough to compete against a weekend team. @Arsenal get a grip."
It was not just the fans who were up in arms with former striker Ian Wright suggesting the team was perhaps complacent after being handed what looked a favourable draw.
"How can we perform so badly at such a crucial stage of the competition?" he wrote. "Not saying we'd win CL, but for MONACO to slap us about like that. Not one Arsenal fan can say they were not delighted with that draw! Maybe we were all complacent."
Wright's former team-mate Lee Dixon was not so keen to highlight a single problem, saying: "One of the worst performances I've seen for a long time. Everything went wrong. That goal at the end was crucial."
It was not only those with direct Arsenal connections who were critical and former Scotland international Craig Burley laid some of the blame at Wenger's door.
"Wow. Arsenal all over the parish tonight. Wenger signs players yet blames their mentality. Schoolboy for the 2nd and suicidal for 3rd," he wrote.
Dimitar Berbatov was on target for Monaco and the enigmatic former Tottenham striker, never famed for his work rate, claimed that his team wanted to win more than Arsenal.
"When Berbatov says he wanted it more you got problems!" said former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. "I feel for Wenger & Arsenal tonight the only consolation is no stupid dressing room selfies."
"No leadership, no energy, no passion, no organisation. Just the truth," added former Reds striker Stan Collymore.
The Champions League was not the only show in London on Wednesday with the Brit Awards taking place at the O2 Arena.
Pop superstar Madonna prompted a Twitter storm of her own when she fell during her show-closing performance, at least giving glum Gunners a touch of schadenfreude to brighten their evening.
"I didn't think anything could bring a smile to myself after that Arsenal performance. Thanks @Madonna," said Morgan, with comedian David Schneider adding: "That fall last night: awful. To see the subject of your admiration for years end up a crumpled undignified heap. But enough about Arsenal ..."
