McDonald scored for Scottish Championship side Partick Thistle in the fourth minute as part of a 2-1 victory for the lowly-placed team.
The former Socceroo striker's close-range header struck the goalkeeper in the head on the way into the net.
McDonald later received a yellow card and was substituted in the 82nd minute.
Elsewhere in Scotland, it was an Aussie on Aussie affair as Ryan McGowan and Jesse Curran's Dundee side took on Ben Garuccio and Oliver Bozanic's Hearts line-up in the Scottish Premier League.
Hearts proved victorious, 1-0, thanks to an early goal, with Garuccio and McGowan starting for their respective sides and Bozanic and Curran getting playing time off the bench.
Tom Beadling was part of Dunfermline Athletic's fifth consecutive competitive victory in the Scottish Championship, with Greenock Morton's John Iredale and Queen of the South's Lyndon Dykes playing the full 90 minutes in losses.
Mitch Langerak was in goals for Nagoya Grampus in the the J-League fixture against Gamba Osaka and despite conceding two goals, an own-goal and a penalty, his side claimed a 3-2 away win.

Alex Gersbach played a full match for NAC Breda in their clash against PSV in the Eredivisie, with Aziz Behich and Trent Sainsbury watching on from the PSV bench.
Adam Taggart had made a scoring start to his K-League career with Suwon Bluewings, but wasn't able to add to his tally in a 4-0 home loss against Jeonbuk Motors after being subbed on in the 26th minute with the score his side already down by three goals.
Elsewhere in Korea, Alexander Jovanovic played ninety minutes in Jeju United's 2-0 away loss to Daegu.
