Boosted by news of Australia's place in Group C at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Wright put in an impressive performance for Bristol City as they continued their climb up the Championship ladder.

Playing at right back, Wright helped his side open the scoring just after the halftime break when he whipped in a first time cross for Joe Bryan to head home.

A Jamie Paterson finish three minutes later doubled Bristol City's lead with Middlesbrough struggling to keep up with their opponents.

An own goal from Robins' defender Horour Magnusson in the 75th minute gave Middlesbrough hope of snatching a point, but it wasn't to be as Wright's Bristol City hung on to secure all three points.

Wright wasn't the only Australian to perform well in Bristol with Ryan Williams finding the back of the net for Rotherham United in their 2-1 loss to Bristol Rovers.

Williams fired into the back of the net from outside the 18 yard box to give Rotherham the lead in the 56th minute.

However, it wasn't to be The Millers' night as Rovers fought back to clinch victory with two late goals

In other Championship action James Meredith put in a solid shift for Millwall as they secured a 3-1 victory against Sheffield United.

Meredith played the full 90 minutes at left back as Millwall cruised to their first win in four games.

Jackson Irvine was named in the starting line-up for club side Hull City as they snatched a last gasp 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

A 95th minute goal from Michael Dawson was the savior for the Tigers  with Irvine playing the entire match on the left wing.

Hull moved to 20th on the ladder and have failed to notch a win in seven matches.

It was a tough night at the office for Queens Park Rangers' Australian captain Massimo Luongo as he received a yellow card in their 1-0 away loss to Preston North End.

Despite having two players sent off in the contest, Luongo's QPR side thought they had held on to claim a point on the road but it wasn't to be with Preston's Jordan Hugill scoring the match winner in the 88th minute.

It was the fourth straight defeat for QPR who remain anchored to the bottom half of the Championship ladder in 18th spot.

In the Netherlands, Brad Jones and his Feyenoord side stopped a three game skid without a win as they defeated Vitesse 1-0 at home.

It was Jones' fifth clean sheet of the season and will surely help his chances of a Socceroos recall ahead of the World Cup.

Tom Juric had a match he would rather forget as he was sent off during his Luzern side's 2-1 win again Sion.

The Socceroos striker recived his marching orders in the 81st minute when he was given a yellow card, his second of the match, for diving after going down in the penalty area after making a breakaway.

While Juric will be forced to spend at least next match on the sidelines, the victory helped his Luzern climb off the bottom of the 10 team Swiss Super League ladder.

It's been a tough weeks for former Sydney FC goal keeper Danny Vukovic who was once again on the wrong side of the scoresheet as his Genk side suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Mechelen.

Vukovic has conceded five goals in his past two league games as Genk drop to eighth on the Belgium First Division ladder.

In Austria, Jimmy Jeggo played 90 minutes in Sturm Graz's 2-1 win against Rheindorf Altach while James Holland was a 48th minute substitute for LASK Linz in their 1-0 defeat to Mattersburg.
