Australia makes it rain again at Para Road Worlds

The Australian team made it rain two more gold medals at the UCI Para Road World Championships in the Netherlands, with Carol Cooke and Emilie Miller winning their time trials, while Stuart Jones bagged silver.

Miller's H1 (handcycle) ITT champion reign continues after she took her third career rainbow jersey in fine style,  covering the 10.4km course in 43mins 42 seconds. 

"I’m very proud to have won back to back world Championships in the ITT," she said. "I believe it reflects the consistency, improvements and good form I’ve shown over the past 12 months.

"I was very happy with my ride, we set a plan to build into it and I feel like I did that really well. I was fast in the first half and stayed strong through the wind to finish well.

"The team has been incredibly successful on both days of the ITT so the atmosphere within the team is really positive. Everyone is able to celebrate each other success, which makes us stronger as a team," 

Miller now turns her attention towards the road race on the weekend.

Carol Cooke claimed her eighth career world title after blistering to the T2 (tricycle) time trial, finishing more than one minute faster than her nearest rival. Cooke stopped the clock on the 20.8km course at 38mins 11:66secs taking the rainbow jersey over longtime rival Jill Walsh (USA). 

"I’m absolutely stoked to have won my eighth title, it actually feels surreal!," remarked Cooke, the dual reigning Paralympic time trial champion. "I think from now on Friday the 13th will be a good luck day for me!

"I wanted to make sure I had something in the tank for the second lap so tried to not take it out too hard," Cooke detailed her ride. "After the first lap I knew I was up on the American but wanted a bigger buffer so really tried to dig deep on the second lap."

"The team is defining a high. We are such a close knit team, athletes and staff, so it’s great to see every doing so well," added Cooke.

Stuart Jones claimed silver in the T2 final, missing out on gold by 15:68, Jones' covering the 20.8kms in 34:22:61.

Stuart Tripp just missed out on a podium, clocking a time of 30:05:62 over 20.8km, bronze medallist Oscar Sanchez (USA) covering the course in 30:05:15.

Alex Welsh finished 18th in the H3 time trial.
