Lightning struck the goal posts which Petrovski was standing next to at the time and had been in a coma since the accident, but tragically passed away on Sunday.

The Malaysian club took to Facebook to share the news and pay tribute to the young Australian goalkeeper, saying: "Melaka United have lost one of their valuable gem as their reserve goalkeeper Marko Stefan Petrovski, 18 passed away later this evening."

Football Federation of Australia also expressed their condolences after Petrovski's death.

"On behalf of the Australian football community, FFA sends their deepest condolences to the Petrovski family, friends and team mates," the FFA said in a statement.

Petrovski's team-mate Muhd Afiq Azuan was also stuck by lightning at the time of the accident but after he was admitted to hospital, the 21 year-old eventually made a full recovery.

Petrovski joined Melaka from Sydney Olympic, who tweeted a heart-felt tribute for their former goalkeeper.
