Bennett began the day nine points ahead of Sagan and finished 12 points up on his rival after cleaning up the sprint behind the early breakaway riders.
Sagan was three places adrift of Bennett, as Deceuninck-QuickStep teammate Michael Mørkøv led out the sprint perfectly for the Irish sprinter.
"It was funny at times, sometimes people thought I was Peter,' said Bennett. "They're so used to seeing him in green!"
Cyclists and sportspeople in general aren't always great interviewees, but Bennett offers honest answers to questions with humour and gave an insight into what it would take to challenge for green all the way to Paris.
"It's a lot of work to get this jersey," said Bennett. "There's almost three parts to every stage; to watch who get's in the break, to go for the intermediate and then do the final. It's very hard and I think I might start feeling it in the last week. We'll take it day by day."
"At the beginning, I was just following the wheel at intermediate sprint points. Then I found myself close and I thought I'd try to see if I could get it for a day. Now I'm here, I'm kind of like we'll see if we can control it. It's working out at the moment. Peter's won it so many times, I'm sure his true colours will come out in the last week which is to his strengths."
Tomorrow's stage should be a sprint finish, with Bennett needing to increase his lead before the Tour de France reaches stages that suit Sagan's versatility a bit better than the Deceuninck-QuickStep sprinter.
The Tour de France continues with the 168km seventh stage from Millau to Lavaur which should be one for the sprinters but might entice the opportunists.
