Brazilian striker Jair returns to A-League with Mariners

Central Coast have filled their fifth and final import spot after confirming the signing of former Newcastle attacker Jair for the rest of the A-League season.

The Brazilian veteran has been unemployed since being released by the Jets following his lone season at the club last summer.

He could line up for the struggling Mariners as soon as Sunday's match against Western United in front of his new home fans.

Jair was heavily criticised for scoring just twice in his 20 games for Newcastle last season, and failing to net in 13 appearances in his previous stint in China.

However Central Coast coach Alen Stajcic talked up his new recruit's goalscoring prowess on Monday.

The 31-year-old tallied 26 goals in 45 games in the K-League between 2016-17.

"Jair is a talented footballer, who has a proven scoring record in the Korean K-League and a number of other leagues around the world," Stajcic said.

"He has trained with us in recent weeks and fitted into the squad well.

"And now I am excited to see him as a part of our team and what he can bring to the table in the A-League."

Jair said he is grateful for the opportunity, having spent the past fortnight training with the squad in an attempt to secure a deal.

"It has been a time of evolution with everyone around me as I've trained with the team," Jair said.

"I feel comfortable working and achieving my ideal condition, and the opportunity is ahead to hopefully enjoy and build an impressive season with the boys."
