Germany's Lennard Kamna proved to be the fastest over the 29.5km course, finishing in 36min 13sec to win the rainbow jersey.

Adrien Costa (USA) finished 44 seconds behind Kamna to take the silver, with 17-year-old Storer a further 14 seconds behind.

Storer set the seventh fastest time at the first time check, and increased his pace to be the third fastest at the second time check. He continued to make gains over the final third of the course, crossing the line to post the second fastest time behind Costa.

It was an anxious wait for Storer as the final 11 riders trickled home, with only top seed Kamna able to beat Costa's time, pushing Storer into third.

"To be right up there, at my first world championships, it is amazing," said Storer. "I am really happy with my ride, don't think I could have gone any faster.

"It was relatively flat, there was one big climb towards the finish, knew I gave it everything you've got.

"It was fantastic to see Macey (Stewart) and Campbell (Flakemore) yesterday, and I just wanted to give it my best shot, so its great to keep the good outcomes going for Australia.

"It is the biggest thing I have ever done, biggest event I have been to, right at the top of my career now."
