Bronzini and van der Breggen sprint to ATOC wins

An action-packed day of racing around the streets of Sacramento saw Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans) snatch the time bonuses she needed to win the overall classification just ahead of Katie Hall (UnitedHealthCare).

Van der Breggen finished a single second ahead of Hall to seal the title while Arlenis Sierra of the Astana women's team finished third overall at 30 seconds.

It was the Olympic champion's fourth UCI Women's WorldTour win of the season after a historic classics campaign.

“For me, it was not a nice day, I mean I’m not a sprinter and I had to sprint for those seconds,” van der Breggen said. "And it was scary."

“Of course the UnitedHealthcare team was really up for me not taking seconds and they tried hard to avoid it, so I’m really happy my team was with me and they gave me the confidence that I could sprint for seconds.

“It was a really tough victory, we really fought for it. I needed my team so badly here this day. “This is really one from the team, and that makes this victory really special.”

Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle High5) then dominated the final bunch sprint ahead of Coryn Rivera (Team Sunweb) and Kirsten Wild (Cylance Pro Cycling).

“I was a bit more confident today,” Bronzini said. “I eventually found the left side which was also covered by the wind, and that gave me the right moment to go over.

“The sprint is just when you think it’s too late so you need to go by instinct, and instinct gave me a reason today.”
