Cahill not concerned about his World Cup spot

Tim Cahill says he is not worried about securing his place with the Socceroos at the 2018 FIFA World Cup despite a lack of game-time since rejoining Millwall.

Cahill has played a total of just 39 minutes in total after his return to the Championship club early last month, as he has been limited to brief cameo appearances off the bench for the Lions.

If selected for Russia, Australia’s all-time goalscorer will be involved in a record fourth World Cup, but denied he is concerned about his spot on the plane in June.

“It’s only a worry if you don’t train hard and you don’t work hard,” Cahill said.

“My set goal is to be myself and I will try my hardest to take every opportunity in the next six weeks that’s coming up.

“I feel that there’s eight games in six weeks that I know I can contribute to. I know as long as I’m training and in the environment I can add a lot on and off the park.”

Millwall haven’t lost since New Year’s Day, with the Lions flying on a 16-game unbeaten run that has seen them shoot up the Championship ladder.

Cahill admitted it would be “unbelievable” to play in a fourth World Cup, but is focused on finishing the rest of the season strongly.

“Everything you do, you sacrificed your whole career to be a professional footballer when you’re younger,” the 38-year-old said.

“And as you get older those moments become less and you realise you have to work harder and you have to watch what you eat and all that sort of stuff.

"But I feel that now I’m just going to enjoy it, but I’m going to work hard and I’m going to make sure I put my teammates through.

“I’ve said to the coaches, this group of players if we sit in the stands or we sit on the bench we’re always going to make sure we support the bigger picture of our team and helping our country get to a World Cup.

“It would be unbelievable obviously, but I’ve never really looked beyond that.”

Cahill is likely to feature at some point against Colombia, with the Socceroos meeting the South American side at Craven Cottage on Wednesday (AEDT).
