Champions League star charged with assaulting woman en route to Jets clash

Persija Jakarta star striker Marko Simic has today faced court after allegedly indecently touching a woman on a flight to Australia ahead of his side's Asian Champions League qualifier against Newcastle Jets.

The 31-year-old was questioned by Australian Federal Police at Sydney Airport after arriving on a flight from Bali on Sunday.

Simic faced Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday accused of common assault and an act of indecency.

The Croatian trained with his side on Monday ahead of the court hearing but it is unclear if he will play against the Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

He will be forced to remain in Australia until his next court appearance on April 9 after he was ordered to surrender his passport.

The charges could carry a jail term if Simic is proven guilty.

A Croatia U-19 and U-21 representative, Simic is somewhat of a journeyman playing for 14 different clubs during a ten year career.

He was Persija Jakarta's star player last season scoring 18 goals in 30 games as the club took out the Indonesian Liga-1 competition.
