Clubs expected to scramble for Maclaren signature

The race is on for the prize signature of Olyroos striker Jamie Maclaren, who finally has been released by his Perth Glory.

Maclaren has gained a release from the remaining year of his contract with Perth and will now begin talks with A-League and European clubs that have expressed interest in securing his services.

It is understood that every other A-League club except Sydney FC had expressed a level of interest in signing the hot shot if he was released by Perth.

Maclaren had been trying to gain a release from Perth since the end of last season, in the wake of the club being banned from competing in the finals series as part of its penalty for cheating the salary cap.

The club refused to grant Maclaren's initial requests for a release but then proceeded to give several other players releases even though they were contracted into next season.
Maclaren was then backed by the players' union, Professional Footballers Australia, in an attempt to gain a release citing a breach of the financial, non-material clause of the standard playing contract.

Again, Perth stood firm, despite other released players stating publicly that the club had repeatedly told the playing group towards the end of the season that any players who were unhappy and didn't want to stay were free to leave.

The matter went to independent arbitration under Football Federation Australia rules and there was a directions hearing involving the two parties last week.

But there has now been a release granted by Perth after further discussions between the two parties, without the need for an independent arbitration panel to resolve the process with a full hearing.

Maclaren, 21, played last season mostly off the bench at Glory behind Irish striker Andy Keogh, but was still potent in front of goal whenever he got the chance.

He started in the last few games of the season alongside Keogh and finished with a flurry of goals.

Maclaren is a key member of Australia's U-23 side that is on the road to qualifying for next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The Perth club has mutually terminated its contract with Maclaren, effective immediately.

The club has released Maclaren to allow him to pursue alternate football opportunities.

"I would like to thank the club and all the fans and members for their support over the past two years. I have many fond memories of WA and have enjoyed my time here," Maclaren said.

"As far as my future is concerned, I don't have any immediate plans, but I would like to wish the club the best of luck in the forthcoming campaign" he said.

Maclaren is originally from Melbourne and is a natural target for the two A-League clubs there, perhaps particularly Melbourne City.
City recently signed striker Corey Gameiro, but since then the club's former Socceroos striker Josh Kennedy has retired, potentially opening up another spot up front.

Maclaren is interested in signing for a club where he will have the opportunity to force a regular starting spot.
