The former AC Milan and Juventus great called time on his glittering career - in which he won the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League twice, and Serie A six times - when his MLS contract with New York City expired in December last year.

On Monday he told Sky Sport Italia he is considering delving back into professional football, this time as a coach.

“I took the course over the summer, so would only be missing the masters’ to get my certificate," he said.

"It’s an idea that does intrigue me.”

“I don’t know yet if it’s something that I will do, but I’ll decide in my own good time.

"If I were to become a coach, it’d only be so I could do it the best way I can.”

Many of Pirlo's former Milan teammates have gone on to become coaches, including Gennaro Gattuso (currently in charge of Milan), Filippo Inzaghi, Clarence Seedorf, Alessandro Nesta and Christian Brocchi.

Gattuso is reportedly on thin ice at the Rossoneri with inconsistent results so far this season, but Pirlo was full of praise for his former midfield partner, saying: “Ringhio is doing a great job and you can see that on the field. All the players are with him.

He also pointed out that Cristiano Ronaldo's quick adaptation to life at Juventus is not unexpected.

“My former teammates tell me he is an exemplary professional. You can see the results on the pitch and I am not at all surprised.

“This Juventus side has so many options, including for free kicks, with the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo.”
