Critically injured Sakakibara 'making progress', out of ICU

Kai Sakakibara's family have given an update on the critically injured Australian BMX rider's improved condition in hospital.

Sakakibara was involved in a serious accident at last month's UCI BMX World Cup in Bathurst, later cancelled due to torrential conditions, and was put into an induced coma at Canberra Hospital's ICU.

For several weeks he has remained in a critical but stable condition, and his family have given an update on his improved condition.

"We are relieved to say that he is making progress — tiny steps in the right direction," said Martin, Yuki and Saya in a statement.

"A key step for Kai is he now off the respirator and can breathe by himself unassisted.

"As he is not dependent on the breathing machinery, it has been possible to move him out of the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and into a high care ward.

They went on to explain some other good news - mainly that the use of heavy sedation drugs have ceased and that he has opened his eyes and is looking around.

"According to the neurosurgeons, Kai is starting the long process of “emerging” from his coma," they continued.

"This is the start of the recovery process; the doctors are happy with the improvements he has made so far."

They also expressed deep gratitude to their friends and the BMX community both locally and globally for fundraising help for Kai, which has amassed over $45,000.
