The Australian professional cyclist died on the evening on November 6 with the sudden death of the Saxo Bank-Tinkoff, Drapac and Fly V Australia rider prompting a mourning of the loss of a vibrant personality within the peloton.
Many within the cycling community knew 'Jonno', and there have been many public messages expressing surprise and sorrow at his passing.
Passionate and occasionally divisive in his interactions within the cycling world, Cantwell spent time as a sales representative and working in a bike shop before racing in the National Road Series. He was a prolific sprinter at that level, winning races seemingly at will and going on to earn a spot in the World Tour with Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff.
His maiden appearance at the 2012 Tour de France was to be his only Grand Tour appearance, with a sixth on stage 4 his best finish in the race.
Cantwell returned to a domestically based team in 2014, racing with Pro-Continental squad Drapac Professional Cycling. His time with the squad ended earlier than expected for either party, with Cantwell ending up pursuing a legal case for termination of his deal just one year into a two-year contract. The case was settled out of court in May this year.
Cantwell's endured a private battle with testicular cancer last year, one that was not well-known until a public post after receiving the all-clear from surgery.
