Danish move will get me back in Socceroos frame, says McGowan

McGowan, who was on loan at K-League side Gangwon last season from Portugal’s Pacos de Ferreira, believes joining Socceroos Awer Mabil and Mustafa Amini in the Superliga will enhance his international prospects.

McGowan, 27, is looking to add to his solitary cap for Australia under former boss Ange Postecoglou, and is convinced a return to Europe could provide the pathway for a recall.

“Going back to Europe was obviously a goal of mine, as I’m still young enough to be testing myself at the best level possible,” he said.

“The Korean experience was a good one it got me some game time in a new and different culture.”

The ex-Hearts and Adelaide United defender made 19 appearances, mainly in an unfamiliar midfield role.

“Denmark is a much better league and a chance to do well and propel myself back into the national team set up,” he added.

“I spoke with both Awer and Musti before moving and they both spoke highly of the standard, and as you can see they both have improved and are playing for the national team currently at the Asian Cup.”

Vendsyssel are third bottom of the Superliga and looking to pick up badly needed points after the winter break.

“They’re an ambitious club that’s looking to stay in the league - and I’ll do everything I can to help them,” added Mcgowan.

Buddy Farrah, McGowan’s agent, said: “The route back to the A-League “was not considered and we had only one motivation: a project that ticked a lot of boxes.

“The boy believes in himself and in cracking it in Europe and so do I.

“To be with the best is to play with the best.”
