Jumbo-Visma has confirmed that Dumoulin was involved in an incident with a vehicle in training on Thursday, a collision with a car that has seen the Dtuch star fracture his wrist.
The incident has effectively ended a 2021 season that saw him take a break from racing early on in the year but return to ride with great success in the second half of the year. He won the Dutch national time trial title and a silver medal in the time trial event at the Tokyo Olympics and had his sights set on the world championships and the Giro Il Lombardia before his crash. He will now certainly miss those races.
“This is a big disappointment,” the 30-year-old Dutchman said via a team press release. “My season is finished. That’s really sour, because I just got really good at it again. Also, during the training today I felt really strong. I had a lot of confidence that I could ride a very strong month.”
According to Jumbo-Visma, Dumoulin had been reconning the course for his Tour de Dumoulin event when “he was hit by a turning car, after which he ended up on the road surface through the hood.”
Dumoulin will undergo surgery on Friday, with a view to returning to competition with Jumbo-Visma, with whom he is contracted until the end of 2022.
