Giro d'Italia champion Tom Dumoulin, Tour de France Green Jersey winner Michael Matthews, Lennard Kamna, Sam Oomen, Soren Kragh Andersen and Wilco Kelderman clocked 47min 50.42sec on the 42.5km course to beat 2014 and 2015 champions BMC by 8.29 seconds.

Australia's Matthews was surprised that they were able to grab the win ahead of the more favoured BMC, led by compatriots Rohan Dennis and Miles Scotson and Team Sky which featured four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome.

"It's a bit of a shock," Matthews said. "We were looking for a podium today so to get the win is really something really special."

Dumoulin felt it was a case of the team showing just how powerful they can be when everything goes right.

"We tried to keep it together especially on the long climb with around 10km to go which just worked out," he said. "We were all flying.

"It's really unexpected but very nice. We knew that we were doing a good time trial but didn't know the time splits until the finish. It was so close and so tense with BMC but we made it at the end. It's the team event of the year and we pulled it off."

For BMC is was the second silver in as many years with Dennis, Scotson, Silvan Dillier, Stefan Küng, Daniel Oss and Tejay van Garderen in a dogfight with Sky for second as they finished with the minimum four riders.

"As we always do, we came here to win gold," Dennis said. It is sometimes a little disappointing to get silver but we're still the second-best in the world here in Norway.

"Team Sunweb's result is surprising but it also isn't. They have been competitive in everything this year and they had a great team here today."

Team Sky, who was down from six to four men 11km from the finish when Geraint Thomas and Owain Doull could not hold the wheel of their teammates, took bronze, 22.35sec off the pace.

More to come.
