Dutch and go as NAC plan swoop for Gersbach

Another Australia defender could be on the move, with Eredivisie strugglers NAC Breda looking to snare Alex Gersbach during the January transfer window.

On the day that Milos Degenek confirmed his move from Red Star Belgrade to Saudi big-guns Al-Hilal, it emerged that NAC are keen to end left-back Gersbach’s three-year stay with Norwegian powerhouse Rosenborg.

The 21-year-old former Sydney FC flier is currently on national team duty - playing second fiddle to PSV Eindhoven’s Aziz Behich at the AFC Asian Cup.

Despite being part of a squad which has won three Eliteseriens, two NM Cupen’s and a Super Cup during this time in Scandinavia, Gersbach has been unable to cement a regular spot in the past two seasons, and is out of contract in June.

NAC was once home to Socceroos coach Graham Arnold during his playing days, and he maintains links there, possibly oiling the wheels of a potential Netherlands move for Gersbach.

The attack-minded Gersbach, who has six Socceroos caps, made only seven appearances in all competitions for Rosenborg this season, and spent four months on loan at Lens the preceding year.

With the lure of regular football on the table in the Eredivisie, Gersbach may be tempted to take the challenge of joining a club which sits second bottom with just 15 points from 17 games and has a relegation battle on its hands.

Melbourne City’s back-up keeper Mark Birighitti was on NAC’s books last season, making 16 appearances before being released.
