Hopes of an A-League marquee move for Samuel Eto’o have been shattered after the Cameroon great signed with Qatar Sports club.

The three-time UEFA Champions League winner is expected to be unveiled by the Qatar Stars League club on Tuesday and joins the likes of Xavi, Wesley Sneijder, Nigel de Jong and Gabi plying their trade in the burgeoning competition.

The move was made possible after Eto’o was given a release by Turkish club Konyaspor despite having a year left on his contract.

Sydney FC was linked to the former Chelsea, Barcelona and Inter Milan player as a replacement for Brazilian striker Bobo who left the club at the end of last season.

It is believed the 37-year-old was interested in the possibility of a move to Australia but it is unknown whether a formal bid from an A-League club was made for Eto’o.

Qatar Sports Club is the 13th club he has played for in a career which has spanned 21 years.

A four-time African Player of the year, Eto’o has collected an astounding number of titles and honours during his career including two Africa Cup of Nations crowns, two UCL winners’ medals with Barcelona and three La Liga titles before departing for Inter Milan.

The legendary striker helped Jose Mourinho’s team win the treble of the Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia in his first season in Italy before moving to Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011.

Eto'o also had brief spells at Chelsea and Everton in the Premier League and netted 56 international goals for Cameroon in 118 appearances.

He has scored a total of 334 career goals in club and international football since making his professional debut for Mallorca in 2003.
