Fans ridicule A-League Star Wars round

A-League fans have mocked Football Federation Australia's announcement of a Star Wars round with the governing body joining forces with Walt Disney in an unexpected commercial partnership.

The cross-promotion, announced on Tuesday, will take place in round 10 of the competition between December 8 and December 10, coinciding with the release of the latest Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, on December 14.

FFA boss David Gallop has hailed the move as a way to "engage with new audiences and expand the football family".

Both parties have also teamed up to produce a video incorporating footage of this season's action with scenes from the the new Star Wars movie.

The FFA have said here will be "character appearances, big screen content, themed activities and giveaways" at matches as well as a "BB-8 supporter ball" available to buy.

"Star Wars is one of the world’s most powerful brands and football is the world’s biggest sport. Like football, Star Wars has super fans that span the globe, it’s a hugely successful franchise and to incorporate this into a round of the Hyundai A-League is very exciting," Gallup said.

However, many Australian football fans did not share Gallop's view.

The NRL has done something similar the past few seasons with 'Marvel Heroes' rounds that involved teams wearing special jerseys inspired by super heroes such as Spiderman and Superman.
