Looking to improve on its performance last season, after missing the finals series, Roar gave its supporters something to cheer about in the opening stages.
Tameka Butt struck first for the host, in the eighth minute, with a chip that evaded United goalkeeper Lydia Williams.
Just three minutes later, Ruth Blackburn doubled the advantge for Roar, ultimately benfitting from a howler from Williams, who dropped the ball into her own net.
But United fought its way back into the contest and hit back in the 39th minute via Michelle Heyman's effort.
Despite both sides enjoying a few chances in the second-half, the game finished at 2-1, with Williams redeeming herself with a couple of nice saves.
