Here, The World Game looks at five players who will be forced to work on their tan next European summer, rather than gracing the football fields of France.
1) Arjen Robben
The 31 year-old was in and out of the Netherlands squad during Euro qualification due to injury and their failure to qualify says it all.
This may have been Robben's last chance to showcase his talent at an international tournament, as he enters the twilight of a decorated career.
2) Edin Dzeko
Dzeko's record for Bosinia and Herzegovina speaks for itself.
With 45 goals in 76 appearances, the 29-year old can find the back of the net with very limited service, but he won't be doing it in June and July.
3) Robin Van Persie
It's been a tough year for the 32 year-old, who fell down the pecking order at Manchester United, and is now struggling for regular game time at Fenerbache.
We all know what breathtaking moments the Dutch striker is capable of, although if he produced more of them the Oranje may well have been going to France after all.
4) Miralem Pjanic
Not as household a name as other players in this list but the Bosnian midfielder is truly capable of the spectacular.
Let this goal the 25 year-old scored against Manchester United do the talking.
5) Henrich Mkhitaryan
Mkhitaryan's magic wasn't enough to secure a fairytale inclusion in EURO 2016 for Armenia.
The 26 year-old is some player, but is now resigned to watching the tournament from home. Like the rest of us.
