Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Betancort dies

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Betancort has died at the age of 78, the club has announced.

Betancort played 177 official games for Madrid and helped the Spanish giant win six league titles, two cups and the European Cup between 1961 and 1971. The Canary Islander also played for local club Union Deportiva Las Palmas and Deportiva La Coruna during his career, and made two appearances for Spain.

A statement on www.realmadrid.com confirmed a minute's silence for Betancort ahead of the Primera Division match between Madrid and Levante at the Bernabeu, with the players wearing black armbands. Madrid went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to a brace from Gareth Bale.
