Garfoot in pursuit of family life and Comm Games gold

Katrin Garfoot will step away from from the UCI Women's WorldTour and Orica-Scott in pursuit of Commonwealth Games gold and family life.

Garfoot's decision comes off the back of a successful tilt at the UCI Road World Championship where she was Australia's top performer with a bronze in the time trial and silver in the road race.

Already based on the Queensland Gold Coast with husband Chris, the 2018 Commonwealth Games dovetails nicely with Garfoot's desire to step away from the racing rigours of Europe for a balanced family life.

“I decided in May that I did not want to race in Europe next season and that was before all that happened with Cycling Australia and Orica,” the 36-year-old told The Advertiser.

"There’s just more to life and I’m married. My first plan was just to do it until the (Rio) Olympics but I wasn’t going that well that year so I thought Comm Games.

“You’ve just got to make decisions in life and I do love time trialling, but road racing is more a love/hate relationship and one part of that is I have to stay in Europe away from family."

While the Commonwealth Games, along with the road nationals, remain individual domestic goals, Garfoot is unsure about other events on the Australian calendar.

“Nationals is usually individual anyway but for TDU (Tour Down Under) and Cadel’s Race (Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race) which are UCI races, you cannot start individually so that’s something to work out, but I’m not the only girl in that position," she said.

“Whatever happens, happens, it’s rather unlikely that I will walk away (from cycling completely) but I don’t discount it totally."
