The 20-year-old Victorian arrived in the race as one of the top Australian hopes for the race, with the final climb of the Mur de Huy expected to suit the explosive climber's abilities.
However, the race ended for Gigante in a local hospital with scans confirming a broken collarbone for the young Australian star of the sport.
Gigante impressed early in the season in Australia as she won the Santos Festival of Cycling in Adelaide, backing up with victory in the national championships time trial. She went to Europe and displayed fine form at races such as Trofeo Alfredo Binda, but has spoken on social media about how she has been caught out in the positioning battles at times in the much larger peloton in the women's WorldTour racing.
Amanda Spratt (Team BikeExchange) was Australia's highest-placed finisher in Fleche Wallonne, finishing ninth on the day after arriving at the Mur de Huy with the winning group.
