Goss in Greipel's shoes

What to do with a rider who is in top-top form but may not be selected to compete at the Tour de France?

That may the be the dilemma facing HTC-Highroad sporting director Allan Peiper ahead of the world's biggest race in July.

Goss could win every event he enters between now and July and still not get a look-in at the Tour.

On the other hand, teammate Mark Cavendish could be in a position where he struggles for the first six months of the season, yet he'll still be the first rider picked given his past form and record in France.

I'm starting to compare Goss with Andre Greipel - in more than one way - and not necessarily because they're very talented bike riders.

And I'm starting to think the Tasmanian may be benched as it's highly unlikely Peiper will do anything to disturb the Cavendish/Renshaw combination and chemistry that has yielded so much TdF success in recent years.

At last year's Vuelta, Goss provided perfect service for Cav who eventually won the points jersey in Spain's Grand Tour.

That being the case there's no question he can do the job whenever required.

But will there be a spot in HTC-Highroad's train in France? Three doesn't go into two as Goss may eventually find out.

Gossy is currently going about his business quite nicely at the moment. He 's on track of winning the Santos Tour Down Under and has set his sights on a top showing at the European Spring Classics, eyeing off Flanders as a priority.

And there's no doubt he is currently world cycling's form rider, but come selection time and he is missing from the TdF roster, he may be forced to move on when his contract expires at the end of the year - just like Andre did and has.
