Dutch website Wielerflits reports the British team were in discussion with van Aert's agent during this year's Tour de France, with manager Dave Brailsford having been keen on the 26-year-old since 2018.

It is believed Ineos will have a €50 million (A$80 million) budget for 2022 and plan to make van Aert the highest earner in the WorldTour.

The Belgian rider remains part of Jumbo-Visma for the time being, however, with whom he earned impressive performances at Milan-Sanremo, the Tour de France and the Tour of Flanders.

Jumbo-Visma have not shied away from Ineos in recent years and are eager to keep van Aert on their books given his recent surge to stardom.

Despite the interest from both parties, van Aert's agent, Jef van den Bosch, has refused to comment on the matter, telling Het Laatste Nieuws: "I'm not communicating about the ongoing discussions."
