'It would be amazing' - Kerr hints at ending career in AFLW

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has hinted she could finish her sporting career in the AFLW, saying a switch to Aussie Rules would be "amazing".

The superstar striker has long been asked about a code switch, with her older brother Daniel Kerr an AFL Premiership winner with the West Coast Eagles.

Kerr grew up playing Aussie Rules before making the move to football at the age of 12 as there were no girls teams for her to play in. 

Since then she has not looked back, becoming one of the biggest names in women's football globally.

The Perth Glory marquee has rejected several overtures from the AFLW trying to lure the star into a code switch.

The 25-year-old says she'd be open to ending her career in Aussie Rules but any potential AFLW switch would not come at the expense of her football career.

"It would be amazing to play AFL and maybe one year I will retire there," she told the Associated Press.

"But yeah, I've just grown to love football now ... I can't see myself back there."

In 2017 former Eagle Dean Cox said Kerr would be the “number one target” for a West Coast AFLW team.

The Matildas star made it clear then she had no interest in a switch as the sport could never offer her the chance to play in a World Cup or an Olympics like football does.

Kerr, who is currently playing for Chicago Red Stars and attracting interest from European clubs, is at the peak of her career so any future move to Aussie Rules would still be a long way off.

The West Coast Eagles will join the AFLW in 2020, with Kerr's brother Daniel last year saying he'd do all he could to see his sister play for them one day.

"I still think she'll finish her career at the Eagles," Daniel Kerr told TAB Radio in 2018. "I'm going to be pushing it hard for the next seven years.

"It would be good, it would be nice - I want her soccer career to finish (first) but being an Eagles man and a strong Eagles man ... I'd be signing the contract for her!"
