Kochie's apology for Bolt-slavery comparison causes more controversy

Sunrise host David Koch has apologised for remarks he made about Usain Bolt in which he inexplicably mentioned slavery.

Koch, alongside his fellow panelists Mark Beretta, Sam Armytage and Natalie Barr, were discussing a potential move for Bolt from the Central Coast Mariners to a European club. 

“So the Mariners sell him for money, they make a lot of money out of it?” Koch asked.

“It’s a win-win: You keep him, great. You sell him, so be it. That’s the tough world of professional football,” Beretta said.

Beretta was mistaken as Bolt is not under contract with the Mariners, rather on trial, and therefore would not receive any compensation as a result of him moving to another club. 

However, it was Koch's next comments that have caused controversy.  

“Who said slavery was over — anyway. No,” Koch said, before quickly changing the topic.

After a barrage of comments on social media condemned Koch's remarks, the Sunrise host took to Twitter to clarify his words. 

Koch said the use of the word slavery was in regards to athletes being able to change clubs.

However, the clarification seemed to ignite the controversy even further, with many people pointing out that slavery still exists in the modern day world, often linking to articles that claim there are over '40 million people in modern slavery'.
