The first signs of a problem for the Multivan-Merida veteran appeared at a race in Montechiari, Italy on 12 April where he was forced to stop at mid-point after suffering a headache and dizziness.
The 2010 world champion returned to normal training but the same symptoms struck again at a race in Haiming, Austria. He then decided to return to Barcelona, Spain for medical tests.
"After 25 minutes of racing I felt very bad again, with a powerful headache so I left the course immediately and I have gone directly to the ambulance," Hermida said.
"I was given oxygen and they have seen that my oxygen level in blood was 85 per cent, which is only normal if you are at very high altitudes.
"We believe that the problem is connected to my lungs. We'll see what the they say, but I will not be able to return to racing until we have that information."
The first cross-country round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will be held 23-24 May, at the Nove Mesto na Morave venue in the Czech Republic.
