Schneiderlin, who has been linked with a host of clubs over the past two seasons, had a medical at Manchester United on Monday (AEST) according to a Daily Mail report.
Meet Morgan Schneiderlin:
The defensive midfielder will become the third major signing in the space of a week, linking up with Matteo Darmian and Bastian Schweisteiger at the ambitious club.
Manchester United had an earlier bid of $41 million rejected in July, with Southampton manager Ronald Koeman describing that offer as 'not serious'.
Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal is understood to have demanded the club return to the negotiating table in an effort to get the deal done in time for the club's pre-season tour of the United States.
Schneiderlin joined Southampton from Strasbourg in 2008, establishing himself as one of the premier central midfielders in England as the club progressed through League One, the Championship and the Premier League.
At the beginning of last season Tottenham had a bid for the 25 year-old rejected and Schneiderlin went on to play in 30 matches for the club.
At the completion of the season he stated a desire to play UEFA Champions League football, sparking speculation of a move.
