McNulty to miss Giro d'Italia ahead of Tour de France call-up

Brandon McNulty will miss the Giro d’Italia this year after UAE Team Emirates omitted the American from their line-up.

McNulty was originally scheduled to lead the team in Italy and build on his 15th-placed finish from last year.

However, after impressing in the Tour of the Basque Country, it’s believed the 23-year-old will instead suit up for the Tour de France, where he will increase Tadej Pogacar’s chances of retaining his 2020 crown.

As McNulty turns his attention towards altitude training in the build-up to the June event, UAE Team Emirates will now rely on Davide Formolo to lead them at the Giro.

Joining Formolo are teammates Fernando Gaviria, lead-out man Maximiliano Richeze, Joe Dombrowski, Diego Ulissi, Valerio Conti, Juan Sebastian Molano and Alessandro Covi.

The Giro d’Italia is scheduled to commence on Saturday, May 8, while the Tour de France will air LIVE, FREE and in HD on SBS and SBS On Demand.
