McNulty was originally scheduled to lead the team in Italy and build on his 15th-placed finish from last year.
However, after impressing in the Tour of the Basque Country, it’s believed the 23-year-old will instead suit up for the Tour de France, where he will increase Tadej Pogacar’s chances of retaining his 2020 crown.
As McNulty turns his attention towards altitude training in the build-up to the June event, UAE Team Emirates will now rely on Davide Formolo to lead them at the Giro.
