Meares could make cycling history in Paris

Anna Meares is on target to become the most prolific women's track cycling world champion in history later this month.

While the Australian legend says she is not setting herself medal targets at the UCI Track World Championships in Paris, France, she's also revealed she is feeling much better about her form than a year ago.

Meares has 10 world titles, equal with French sprint queen Felicia Ballanger. But the Australian had to settle for two silvers at last year's championships.

It was the first time since 2006 that Meares had gone to the worlds and not won a title.

She missed the 2008 event because of her near-fatal neck injury and had a post-Olympics sabbatical in 2013.

"I am really happy with where I am at, but I am not giving myself outcome-based goals," Meares said.

"I am in a very different place now than 12 months ago.

"I am much more content with my preparation and my goals and and I know that this race will be better than my last.

"My goal is all about Rio in 2016 and these world championships will be a huge step to prepare me for that."

Meares will race in all four sprint events at the 18 February Paris worlds.

After Australia opted out of the women's team sprint last year, she will ride second wheel in between Stephanie Morton and Kaarle McCulloch.

Women's team sprint has gone from two to three riders and McCulloch has returned from injury to bolster the squad.

McCulloch and Meares won bronze in the team sprint at the London Olympics after dominating the event for the previous three years.

At last month's track nationals, Meares won the sprint and was a member of the winning team sprint trio.

Morton beat her in the keirin final and Meares did not ride in her pet event, the 500m time trial.

"I want to be able to communicate well with (coach) Gary West, to understand our race plans, try some new things," she said.

"That was really pertinent for me at nationals, it all started to come together and I had the feel back again.

"That is really exciting for me."

Meares and fellow sprint veteran Shane Perkins will lead a team of 20 riders at the world championships.

She is competing at her 12th senior worlds and Perkins will race at his ninth championships.
