Melbourne to Warrnambool rescheduled for new date

The historic Melbourne to Warrnambool race will still take place in 2021, after organisers settled on a new date of May 1 for the oldest and longest Australian classic.

The initial event was set to take place on February 13, but had to be postponed after the Victorian Government announced a five-day snap lockdown on February 12.
The new date brings the race closer to others within the 'Classics season' that forms part of the National Road Series (NRS), with the Grafton to Inverell on May 8 and Tour de Brisbane on April 11.

Sponsors and partners involved in the race are committed to producing a 'Warrny' event just as good as what was originally planned for the February date.

“What had planned to be a great Warrny last weekend, will now be a great Warrny on the 1st of May,” said Shane Wilson, chair of the Warrnambool Citizen’s Road Race Committee.

“The cycling community and our partners have provided us with great support to reschedule so quickly.  Our team is raring to go.”

Naming sponsors and long time supporters Powercor Australia praised the resilience of the 126-year event ahead of the rescheduled date.

“While postponing the race last week was disappointing, having a new date confirmed is a terrific outcome for the riders and the community,” said Powercor Australia Brand & Partnerships Lead Nina Ivanovic.

“The support we’ve received over the last few days from so many people getting behind the race has been tremendous.”
