We can get better.
Those are the four words set to send chills up the spine of Melbourne Victory's A-League rivals, as Carl Valeri said he and his team-mates are being pushed to even greater levels of performance by coach Kevin Muscat.
Victory emphatically took over top spot in the A-League with a 3-0 win over title contender Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on Sunday.
"I'd love to say that Kevin was 100 per cent satisfied, but being a good coach he always finds areas that we can work on," Valeri said.
"I think in any good team environment - no matter the last result - there's always room for improvement.
"That's what's great about this club.
"We want to build on what we did against Wellington. There are definitely areas we can work on and improve and maybe get more consistent in others."
Victory is equal on points with second-placed Perth Glory and just three points ahead of Sydney FC in fifth.
It has a game in hand on those four teams, which could prove pivotal, but Valeri said it won't be distracted from its pre-season goal of finishing top by the dogfight for positions in the top six.
"We're a smart team, I think, on and off the pitch and the group knows that we've got to stick together and focus," he said.
"Once we start looking too far ahead you lose your way."
Victory hosts Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park on Friday night, before heading to Brisbane where it will play Roar twice in four days to make up for the game that was called off due to Cyclone Marcia in February.
