Mooy can play for anyone in Premier League, claims Skoko

Former Premier League midfielder Josip Skoko has dubbed Aaron Mooy “good enough” to play for any club in the competition, as his star continues to rise.

Mooy’s two-goal command performance for Huddersfield Town in the weekend’s shock 2-0 win at Wolves set off ripples of appreciation across the English game.

And at 28, Mooy - according to former Wigan and Socceroos favourite Skoko - has never been better placed to join one of the Premier League elite clubs.

A growing number of eyes are trained on Socceroos linchpin Mooy as he attempts to spearhead Huddersfield’s bid to remain in the top echelon for a second successive season, with 51-cap Skoko one his most avid admirers.

“Aaron has shown what he’s all about and, for me, there’s no team in the Premier League too big for him,” said Skoko, who spent three seasons in the Premier League with the Latics.

“It’s a matter of a bigger club taking note and deciding he can bring them something extra. He’s certainly showing his qualities.

“I’d like to see him maybe make that move in the not too distant future. I think it’s definitely a possibility.”

Mooy’s influence with the Terriers, for whom he is looking increasingly menacing in a more advanced role for coach David Wagner this season, is key.

But rather than fearing he might be reduced to squad player status at a team with a deeper squad and enhanced player pedigree, Skoko, 42, thinks the opposite might happen.

“At a bigger club he’d been in a team that enjoys more possession and things like that,” added Skoko who made 51 league appearances for Wigan and nine on loan at Stoke.

He also starred in Turkey with Genclerbirligi, and had two spells with Hajduk Split before winding up his career in the A-League with then named Melbourne Heart.

“I think it would actually bring even more to his game, and make him that much better,” he continued.

“It’s tough playing at the smaller clubs. I know from my experience with Wigan.

“It was more about containing teams at times, and often we didn’t play that much football.

“If I had played in a better team I would’ve played a lot more football and would’ve been better suited to it. I think the same could apply to Mooy.

“He’s good enough to play in any team in England and the more ball they have the better he will look.”

In fairness to Huddersfield, they put on a Barcelona-esque masterclass at Molineux, with Mooy at the heart of it all.

Mooy has 18 months remaining on his Terriers contract, and has previously attracted interest from the likes of West Ham and Newcastle United.

“Who would he suit? I don’t know,” added Skoko.

“Most of the teams around the top eight play a decent brand of football.

“And I’m sure he would jump at the opportunity wherever it may be.

“The thing I like about him is he is always looking to produce that breakthrough ball and has that creativity about him.

“That wins you games a lot of times (as was the case against newly-promoted Wolves).

“He has a bit of everything: the pace of the game is intense in the EPL and that’s another area where he’s improved a lot.

“You need to have that in your locker. You can’t these days, as a modem footballer at that level, not be able to run and tackle. If you can’t do that you’re a passenger.

“Aaron loves getting stuck in, which is great to see.

“He has a great opportunity (to push on now). I joined Wigan when I was 29, so the period immediately ahead of him now would be perfect to make a big move.

“But it’s never too late. You just have to wait for the right opportunity to come along.”

In the latest installment of the Mooy show, Huddersfield - who remain two points clear of the drop zone - host Mat Ryan’s Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday (AEDT).
