Mooy's Huddersfield go joint top with win over Newcastle

Australia's Aaron Mooy once again played a significant role for Huddersfield Town as they surprised Newcastle with a 2-1 win at St. James' Park to move them up to equal first on the Championship table.

Mooy played the full 90 minutes completing 47 passes at an 89% completion rate as Town sat back and opened up Newcastle on the counter-attack.

"Too often they (Newcastle) were second best to a Huddersfield side for whom the on-loan Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy excelled," Graeme Anderson wrote in The Guardian

The former Melbourne City midfielder once again was praised on social media for his performance.

Huddersfield took the lead just before half-time in front of a sell-out 52,000 crowd when Nahki Wells guided a shot into the bottom corner after he was found by a cross from Rajiv van La Parra.

Dwight Gayle pulled one back for the hosts in the 60th minute before Jack Payne scored the winner with just eight minutes remaining to send Huddersfield to the top of the table after two matches.

For Newcastle, it's their second loss in a row under Rafael Benítez in the Championship.

Huddersfield will next take on Aston Villa on Wednesday morning (AEST).
