Dwight Gayle pulled one back for the hosts in the 60th minute before Jack Payne scored the winner with just eight minutes remaining to send Huddersfield to the top of the table after two matches.
For Newcastle, it's their second loss in a row under Rafael Benítez in the Championship.
Huddersfield will next take on Aston Villa on Wednesday morning (AEST).
