No early Classics start for injured Degenkolb

The European classics season will miss its biggest star as a result of last month’s horrifying training accident in Calpe, Spain.

John Degenkolb was one of six Giant-Alpecin riders who were run over by a motorist while training in Calpe.

Last year the German solidified his status as one of the best classics riders of his generation by winning both Milan San Remo and Paris-Roubaix.

Degenkolb today confirmed that he is set to miss any defense of those titles as a result of his injuries.

“The healing process is fortunately going as well and as can be expected,” Degenkolb wrote on his Facebook page.

“The cut on the thigh is already largely shut. And yesterday I rode on the trainer for the first time to get the circulation going. The injured finger is the most serious and that needs to heal for several weeks.

“The treatment here in Hamburg is excellent and I’m really happy with the support.

“Nevertheless, the consequence of this is that I will most likely not be at the start of the Classics.

“In principle the injury would not prevent me from starting, but I would not be at my normal competitive level after missing out on training.

“Those who know my ambition, also know that I only want to be there if I can get a top result. So, it’s better to use the time to let the injuries heal completely.”
