Off-contract Georgievski ready to swap Jets for Wanderers

Two-time A-League grand finalist Daniel Georgievski is set to join his third club in the competition, after agreeing to terms with Western Sydney Wanderers for next season.

The 31-year-old full-back - who can operate on either the right or left - is off contract with the Newcastle Jets, who due to a recent tightening of the purse strings can’t match what Markus Babbel is offering to lure the Macedonian-Australian to Wanderland next season.

Babbel views the all-action Georgievski as a ready-made replacement for Socceroos right-back Josh Risdon, who has committed his future to A-League new-boys Western United.

Youngster Tate Russell, 19, has been occupying the right-back spot of late, racking up 10 appearances so far this season, whilst Tarek Elrich, 32, has made 21 appearances on the left as Babbel’s side have kept alive a mathematical chance of making the play-offs.

They trail sixth-placed Melbourne City by 10 points with six regular-season games remaining going into Sunday’s road trip to Wellington Phoenix.

An FFA Cup winner with Victory in 2015, Georgievski - who has 22 caps for Macedonia - was a Joe Marston medal winner for Victory as they lost the 2017 grand final on penalties to Sydney.

He missed out on silverware again last year when former club Victory controversially squeezed past the Jets in the decider.

Georgievski has made 43 appearances for the Jets in all competitions over the past two seasons.
