Phoenix takes advantage of Mariners howler to progress in FFA Cup

A disastrous mistake from Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Paul Izzo allowed Wellington Phoenix to claim a 1-0 win in the FFA Cup round of 32 in Gosford on Tuesday.

Phoenix went in front on 18 minutes after Kwabena Appiah took full advantage of a horror error from Izzo as he attempted to play out from inside the penalty area.

Central Coast had an excellent chance to level the score when it won a penalty in the final stages of the contest, but the effort struck the bar.

Despite the strong turnout, it was Wellington who prevailed to book its place in the round of 16.
