Roar confirms Henrique out for the season

Brisbane Roar confirmed Henrqiue's knee injury will keep him out of action until later in the year, while the club also faces the prospect of losing key defender Jerome Polenz for up to four weeks.

But the news is better for injured international marquee Thomas Broich and experienced goalkeeper Michael Theo.

Broich and Theo are scheduled to resume full squad training this week although a decision on their availability for to face Central Coast Mariners on Thursday will not be made until later in the week.

While the possible return of the duo is a boost for Roar, the news was not so good for Henrique.

The Slippery Fish had an operation on his knee on Thursday with doctors opting for full reconstruction.

Henrique injured his anterior cruciate ligament in the AFC Champions League game against Suwon Bluewings 10 days ago.

The speedy striker, who is the Roar’s leading scorer this season (eight goals), is not expected to return to full training until later in the year.

Right-back Jerome Polenz was injured in the warm-up to Saturday night’s 1-0 loss to Melbourne City forcing Roar coach Frans Thijssen into an unexpected reshuffle of his backline. Polenz will have a scan on the injury on Monday.

Defenders Jade North and Daniel Bowles, who had been on the sidelines for nearly a month (North with a groin strain and Bowles with an illness), stepped up in Polenz’s absence.

With the Roar facing two games a week for the next three weeks, Thijssen praised North and Bowles for typifying the diehard spirit Brisbane will need to maintain in its busy upcoming schedule.

“Jade and Daniel did a great job for us. They showed real courage,” Thijssen said.
