Rogers hints the 2016 season will be his last

Michael Rogers says the time will be right to say farewell to professional cycling after the Rio Olympic Games, calling curtains on more than 20 years at the peak of the sport.

Journeyman... Michael Rogers has pretty much seen it all in cycling, and will hope to end on a high at next year's Tour de France.

Rogers has enjoyed a glittering career in cycling, with wins at the Amgen Tour of California, the UCI Road World Championships, as well as stages at the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia. His career was marred by bouts of the Epstein-Barr virus which wrote-off the best part of two seasons, and ultimately forced him to re-assess his ambitions as a GC rider, but the Australian was still successful even into his career twilight.

"I think it's time, 16 years that will give me and I'm very proud of what I've done, but that's enough, that's enough," Rogers told Fairfax Media.

"It's physically been very demanding and my girls are growing up quickly so it's time also to be a father and think about something else."

Rogers currently rides with the Tinkoff-Saxo team and is expected to ride the Tour de France next year in support of Alberto Contador, before, pending selection, a ride in the Rio Olympic Games.
