Rogic nets to help Celtic end tough week with victory

Tom Rogic has helped Celtic put the disappointment of their UEFA Champions League elimination behind them by scoring during their 3-1 last-16 win against Scottish second division side Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup.

The Socceroos star put the icing on the cake for Celtic when he fired home his side's third goal of the match with a cool volley from the centre of the penalty area in the 80th minute.

It was Rogic's second goal of the campaign so far, with the mercurial midfielder delivering a bounce back performance after a tough outing during the Hoops' loss to AEK Athens on Wednesday (AEST).

The Australian was everywhere early on for Celtic, having a shot saved after 12 minutes before creating a number of chances with his slick passing and driving runs at the opposition defence.

The win was Celtic's first in three games and is sure to help rebuild their confidence, as well as buy some more time for embattled coach Brendan Rogers.

Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring for Celtic in the 17th minute but Thistle weren't going to lay down without a fight.

Andrea Mbuyi-Mutombo returned fire for Partick with 18 minutes left on the clock making for a nervy final few minutes for the visitors.

However, a third straight defeat was avoided as Moussa Dembele and Rogic scored back-to-back goals in quick success to wrap up the win.

It was an important result for Celtic with the team now set to meet Lithuanian side FK Suduva in the UEFA Europa League playoffs on Friday (AEST).

Socceroos rising star Daniel Arzani was not named in the squad for the match after completing his loan move to the Scottish champions from Manchester City earlier this week.
